  1. June Gloom by Big deal – Sometimes its hard liking your friends’ bands – not a problem with Big Deal – authentic and emotive. I love this album so much it makes me feel a bit sick.
  2. Blood Pool by Technicolor Teeth – these Wisconsin shoegazers only managed to put 1 songs out this year – but its a winner. Track them down and see them live – you won’t be sorry.
  3. Slow Focus by Fuck Buttons – Nasty, fuzzy, hypnotic electro-post-rock. Love it!
  4. Electric by Pet Shop Boys – Sorry Daft Punk fans, I wasn’t impressed with their efforts in 2013. This is how you do retro disco-electro.
  5. Tomorrow’s Harvest by Boards Of Canada – Always love BOC, but they’ve taken their uncannily retro, spooky monosynth space soundtrack to a new level of nerve-chilling minimalism with this album.
  6. Monomania by Deerhunter – Wonderfully original and unconstrained lo-fi indie, harking back to early Pavement.
  7. Silence Yourself by Savages – Dark, avant-garde, angular, post-punk British girl-group with a sexy French singer – what else do you want?
  8. The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You by Neko Case – What a strange band – MOR-folk-country that’s unexpectedly edgy!?Still not sure if I love this album, but I can’t find any reason not to like it.
  9. Defend Yourself by Sebadoh – Like they’d never been away. Lou Barlow is back to break your heart and Jason Lowenstein to break your arm.
  10. Psychic by Darkside – I could give a shit if this sounds like Pink Floyd – its chilling and brilliant!

Reissues:

  1. World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? by William Onyeabor – Obscure weirdo African funk/electro pioneer collected for the first time. Check this shit out – its a bit scratchy, but absolutely inspired!
  2. Ghetto Defendant (extended version) by The Clash featuring Allen Ginsberg – CBS trawled the depths this year and released a new ‘Greatest Hits’ remastered (poorly) by Mick Jones. They also issued the ‘Sound System’ box set with some previously unreleased tracks including this extended version – featuring old Ginsberg. The Clash at their most unrestrained, creative height.
